A Mother’s Outcry: The Single Mothers’ Protest in the Israeli News

Session: We will look at the ways the Israeli media presented a major protest of low income single mothers (the ‘Vicki Knafo’ protest), and ask what does it tell us about class and ethnic stereotypes, power imbalance, and Israeli family norms and values.
Bio: Noa Milman is a Marie Curie Postdoc researcher in the Department of Sociology at Copenhagen University. She studies social movements, media discourse and race class and gender. Currently she explores immigration and welfare policies in Denmark. In Israel she led and mentored groups of regional leaders at Mandel Center for Leadership in the Negev.
